About the Club
In 1991, Devon Woods and Cindy Bates decided to form an Ottawa-based basketball club for girls that their daughters, who were then in Grade 5 - could enjoy and benefit from. They started with sixteen 10 & 11 year old girls that year and practised in one of the Glashan gyms. They won zero games but had a blast. Parents also reported that their daughters' self-confidence improved.
The following year we increased to thirty Grade 5 & 6 girls and ran a great House League with Grade 8 girls coaching and "mentoring" four teams. We pulled together two competitive teams that year, an "A" and a "AA" but we were still very weak.
The following year we added a Bantam division and had two "A" competitive teams again (as well as a solid Minor Bantam team). One of them led the EOBA the entire season, but with two players off to Florida and our 20-point-a-game scorer in a cast with a serious sprain, we did not win the end-of-season championship.
In 1994, they had two Bantam teams and two Minor Bantam teams. This was the first year they took a team to provincials, combining the 12 most solid players fronted 2 Bantam teams into an "All-Star" team.
The following year we "sistered" with the Ottawa Rookies and moved up to the Midget level. We had an outstanding "AA" Bantam team which was near the top of the standings for most of the season. Obvious talent was beginning to emerge from our club and some of the best players today in eastern Ontario developed with the Stars.
The last three years saw our midget program burgeon and we expanded into the Juvenile age group. As of the 1998-99 season, we were composed of players on 7 different teams from the age of 9 in a new Minor Bantam age House League program developed by Kim Sparks and Kim Lambert to 17-years-olds. We have provincial-level coaches, exceptional athletes and knowledgeable, supportive parents.
